<p>At the beginning of 2018, Kent C. Dodds came to our team at [egghead](https://egghead.io) with an ambitious project. A collection of 8 courses bundled into a single online learning platform – all of them focused on techniques for testing JavaScript code.<br /><br />I led the art direction and created illustrations for the project, while my design partner [Vojta Holik](https://vojta.io/) did all the UI and development work.</p>

## Module Illustrations

The course included eight modules that each needed an individual illustration. To make sure they all felt like a unified set, I established a common colour palette, and consistent shape language.

### Exploration & Concepting

The first challenge was to figure out a cental design idea for the shirt.
We knew there were core principals the design should communicate – React is powerful, flexible, and immensely popular in the development community.

I did an initial round of 360° brainstorming of all the directions we could take it.

### Making Choices & Refining Designs

After reviewing the possible directions with the team, we decided the 'reactive' volcano design both expressed React's core themes and worked as a simple and strong visual.

From there I explored more subtle shifts in design elements, details, and composition options. Vectorising the primary shapes helps make these small experiments fast and easy, and lays the groundwork for the final vectors.

## Hundreds of feature illustrations for the web development courses on [egghead.io](https://egghead.io/)

Between 2015 and 2021 I was the art director and lead illustrator at egghead – a learning website for web developers.

For every course we released, I created a unique illustration that captured the main concept. We used these across our website to help users browse visually, as well as for marketing and promoting the courses.

Addy Osmani from the Google Chrome team got in touch when they needed a new
design for their Speedometer tool. The tool tests how fast a web app
responds, given a pile of simulated user interactions like mouse movemenets,
clicks, and keyboard input.{" "}

<p>
The team wanted a distinctive illustrated badge of a speedometer to use
across the website and branding. Given my love of finely-rendered mechanical
details, the project was a great fit.
</p>

I developed three different speedometeres for the team to pick from – each used subtle visual cues related to Chrome and JavaScript.
